Center for Civic Engagement Winter 2021 COVID-19 FWS Update

For the past two decades, the Center for Civic Engagement has offered students work study positions with partner organizations in the Kalamazoo community. Due to the COVID-19 crisis, these positions are unfortunately not available at this time.
In a typical year, over 100 work study eligible students are employed in our programs with Communities in Schools and Kalamazoo Public Schools (Woodward and El Sol), Community Advocates for Parents and Students at Interfaith Homes (CAPS), Goodwill Industries, and the Kalamazoo County ID Program.   We feel strongly about making opportunities in these programs accessible to all, not just those who can volunteer their time, and recognize how important these paid positions are for students.
The heart of our programs has been building relationships with community partners, and we recognize that sustaining these relationships is more critical than ever. We also recognize the impact this loss has on students who seek these positions not only for the experience of working in the community but the financial support it provides.
For the Winter  Quarter, the KPS district continues to be 100% remote learning with the goal of returning to  in-person for its third trimester in April if it is deemed safe by KPS administrators and  school board. At the current time all of our partner organizations where we have work-study positions continue to have virtual only programming.
This winter some of our partners offered virtual work-study positions on a very limited basis and these were posted on Handshake.  At this point we do not anticipate additional positions becoming available but if they do we will once again post them on Handshake.

We look forward to continuing to connect K students with community organizations and residents as soon as it is safe. Please feel free to reach out with any questions.
